We ran Claude and ChatGPT in parallel across client delivery for six months — identical system prompts, identical briefs, identical evaluation criteria across content drafting, operational workflow automation, and strategic analysis. This is not a feature comparison pulled from documentation. It is production data built on the output metrics that actually change model selection decisions: editing passes per draft, system prompt fidelity across long conversations, and the economic question of how unlimited model access changes team behaviour. The decision we made shaped how we operate multi-model infrastructure for every retainer client we now run.

The test setup

We gave both models identical system prompts, identical briefs, and identical evaluation criteria across three categories: long-form content drafting, operational workflow automation, and strategic analysis. Each output was scored on accuracy, adherence to brand voice, factual reliability, and the amount of editing required before publishing.

Where Claude pulled ahead

Claude consistently required fewer editing passes. Not marginally — the average draft from Claude needed two rounds of revision; ChatGPT averaged four. The difference compounds fast when you are producing ten pieces a week. Claude also handled complex system prompts better, maintaining instruction fidelity across longer conversations without drifting into generic outputs.

The Claude Max factor

For a solo operator running production marketing systems, Claude Max changed the economics entirely. Unlimited Opus access at a flat rate means you stop rationing intelligence. You use the best model for every task instead of downgrading to cheaper tiers to manage costs. That shift — from cost-optimising model selection to always using the best available — is what turned Claude from a tool into an operating layer.
